Lidl Austria Expands Electric Fleet With Major eActros 600 Order, Aiming for Emissions-Free Deliveries by 2030

Lidl Austria is accelerating its transition to zero-emission logistics, signing a new framework agreement for 42 additional Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks. The deal follows the delivery of 14 units already in operation, with the first 20 e-trucks set to begin nationwide store deliveries by the end of this year. Alongside the fleet expansion, the company is developing what is expected to become the most powerful truck-charging network in Austria’s grocery retail sector.

The first eActros 600 vehicles were officially commissioned at the opening of a new charging park at Lidl’s Laakirchen logistics center. CEO Michael Kunz presented the trucks and charging infrastructure to Austria’s Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, Peter Hanke, joined by Daimler Truck Austria CEO Jens Tittel.

The initiative is part of Lidl’s broader “Net Zero by 2050” climate strategy, with Lidl Austria positioning itself as a pioneer of sustainable transport in the country. Since 2024, the retailer has integrated electric trucks into daily operations using exclusively green electricity, including power from rooftop photovoltaic systems at logistics hubs.

Austrian Retail Leader With Growing Sustainability Ambitions

Based in Salzburg, Lidl Austria operates more than 250 stores and three logistics centers, employing around 5,800 people. The company, founded by Dieter Schwarz and part of the Schwarz Group, has been active in the Austrian market since 1998.

eActros 600: Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Long-Haul Electric Flagship

Launched in series production in late 2024, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 has already proven its long-distance capabilities during extensive European test tours and has been named “International Truck of the Year 2025.” Equipped with over 600 kWh of battery capacity and a newly developed electric drive axle, the truck delivers a range of around 500 km under realistic 40-ton operating conditions, with the potential to exceed 1,000 km per day through opportunistic charging during mandatory driver breaks.

Its three LFP battery packs (621 kWh installed capacity) are engineered for long life, targeting 1.2 million km over ten years with more than 80% battery health remaining afterward. The eActros 600 supports a gross combination weight of up to 44 tons and offers a payload of roughly 22 tons with a standard semitrailer.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has recently broadened the eActros 600 lineup to more than 40 variants, offering different cab types, battery configurations, wheelbases, and axle layouts to suit a variety of long-haul applications.

Driving Decarbonization in Freight Transport

Mercedes-Benz Trucks continues to integrate sustainability across its operations, from electric and hydrogen drivetrains to resource-efficient manufacturing and digital fleet services. Its advanced safety and driver-assistance technologies further support Daimler Truck AG’s mission to enable CO₂-free, technologically advanced, and safer road freight transport.

Lidl Austria’s growing fleet of eActros 600 trucks marks another significant move toward achieving emissions-free store deliveries by 2030.
