Luka Koper Orders Four More Electric Konecranes RTGs to Advance Port Modernization
Slovenia’s Port of Koper is set to further modernize its container terminal after Luka Koper placed a repeat order for four additional Konecranes electric rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes. The deal, booked in Q3 2025 with delivery scheduled for Q2 2026, follows a similar order made in 2024 as the port continues its transition toward cleaner, more efficient operations.
The new electric RTGs will replace older diesel-powered units, drawing energy from cable reel systems connected to the local grid and supported by onboard battery packs for stack changes. Each crane will include Konecranes’ Truck Lift Prevention technology to enhance safety during container handling.
“This latest order builds on a relationship that has grown over many years, based on proven results and shared eco-efficiency goals. The new Konecranes RTGs support our modernization program by combining reliable performance with lower emissions,” says Edvin Boskin, Container Terminal Technical Manager at Luka Koper.
Luka Koper, operator of Slovenia’s only cargo seaport and a major Adriatic gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, already runs a sizable fleet of Konecranes equipment — including 32 RTGs and four rail-mounted gantry cranes, one of which is equipped with a Remote Operating Station.
“By ordering the same type of electric Konecranes RTGs as last year, Luka Koper can scale its modernization program even faster. This repeat order shows how ports can enhance daily operations and reach eco-efficiency targets,” says Philipp Reiter, Regional Sales Manager, Konecranes Port Solutions.
The investment aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which promotes low- and zero-emission solutions aimed at shrinking customers’ carbon footprints while boosting the company’s environmental handprint. Konecranes cites continued innovation, digitalization, and a focus on safe, efficient material flow as central to its leadership in the port equipment sector.
