Construction Begins on 430-Metre Quay at Port of Aarhus

Construction is now underway on a major expansion at the Port of Aarhus, as work begins on a new 430-metre quay. The project, a key element in completing the long-awaited Omniterminal, has been officially approved by the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority.

This week, contractor MT Højgaard Danmark initiated the first phase of construction by placing the initial steel plates into the water, marking a significant milestone in the port’s development.

The new quay is being built with an innovative design that reduces concrete use, significantly lowering CO₂ emissions compared to traditional quay construction—without sacrificing structural strength. Additionally, the facility is being constructed with future sustainability in mind and will be immediately ready to accommodate shore power systems for container ships, helping reduce emissions from docked vessels.

It is a bit of a milestone for us that we can now start construction on the final stage of the Omniterminal. The quay facility a crucial element in securing another attractive area at the port, which I am of course delighted that we have already leased out. With the plans for a new container terminal, we provide space for more opportunities for business, strengthen security of supply and, not least, create jobs for the benefit of Aarhus and the whole of Denmark, says Thomas Haber Borch, CEO of the Port of Aarhus.

The quay will feature a 14-metre water depth and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Once finished, the expanded terminal will enhance capacity and sustainability at Denmark’s largest container port.
