Berglandmilch Standardizes Warehouse Systems with SAP® EWM by KNAPP

Berglandmilch, one of Austria’s largest dairy processors, is partnering with KNAPP to unify its IT landscape by implementing SAP® EWM across four logistics sites. KNAPP IT Solutions is designing and deploying the template solution as part of a comprehensive WMS retrofit project, replacing both SAP® WM and non-SAP® systems over the next several years.

Headquartered in Wels, Berglandmilch processes around 1.3 billion kilograms of milk annually from over 7,800 farming members and manages brands including Schärdinger, Tirol Milch, Stainzer, and Lattella. Its current WMS setup varies by site: Aschbach-Markt operates a non-SAP system, while Geinberg, Feldkirchen, and Wörgl use SAP® WM.

“Continuous improvement of our business processes is central to Berglandmilch’s strategy. As part of our digital transformation, we are deliberately investing in modern, future-proof infrastructures. Selecting SAP® EWM was a logical step to harmonize our IT and logistics systems and bring them to a new technological level. KNAPP is an experienced and innovative partner, impressing us with both their comprehensive expertise in WMS retrofits and their collaborative approach,” explains Manfred Prehsegger, Head of IT at Berglandmilch.

The rollout begins with a detailed solution concept based on warehouse process analysis, addressing critical success factors, risks, timeline, and budget. SAP® EWM by KNAPP will integrate existing automation technologies—including palletizing systems, conveyors, and automated guided vehicles—without middleware. In Aschbach-Markt, SAP® EWM MFS will act as the new WCS layer, controlling highly automated processes, with KiSoft SCADA providing continuous system monitoring.

“The focus of the solution concept was the state-of-the-art, fully automated logistics center in Aschbach with around 20,700 pallet spaces. However, the warehouses in Wörgl, Feldkirchen, and Geinberg were also considered as part of the template solution. This approach enables efficient implementation of SAP® EWM across all four distribution centers, with seamless integration of existing automation technologies from various third-party providers. Moreover, the solution is designed to be flexible and future-proof, allowing Berglandmilch to adapt to market changes and potential expansions in its site network,” reports Gerald Lassau, Managing Director of KNAPP IT Solutions GmbH.

The new system will also enhance transparency, connecting production planning with SAP® EWM via a custom interface and replicating key features such as the production and picking cockpit. The staged rollout will see Geinberg go live in 2026, Aschbach in 2027, and Feldkirchen and Wörgl in 2028, with ongoing 24/7 support from KNAPP’s SAP® EWM experts.
