London Gateway container volumes rise more than 50%, setting new annual record

Container volumes at DP World’s London Gateway have increased by more than 50% this year, surpassing three million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025 and setting a new annual handling record for the port.

The growth follows the commissioning of a fourth berth and the introduction of additional vessel calls from the Gemini Cooperation’s Asia–Europe services. London Gateway handled 1.9 million TEUs in 2024, meaning volumes have risen by more than 52% year on year as the port continues its expansion.

DP World also reported increased throughput at its Southampton terminal, which exceeded two million TEUs in 2025. Combined volumes across London Gateway and Southampton have now passed five million TEUs, placing DP World at the centre of the UK container market, which totals more than nine million TEUs annually.

Further expansion is underway at London Gateway, where construction has begun on two additional all-electric berths as part of a £1bn investment. Once complete, the terminal will have six berths capable of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels. A second rail terminal at the site became operational in 2025, and a new BOXBAY container handling system is set to be installed under a £170m investment over the next two years.

Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President – North Europe, DP World, said: “Every container that moves through our terminals at London Gateway and Southampton is moving goods that underpin British business and daily life, from food on our shelves to products keeping manufacturers and high streets running. Our UK infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping these supply chains running quickly and efficiently, especially during the busiest times of the year.

“Surpassing five million TEUs at our UK terminals demonstrates how investment in capacity, technology and resilience is allowing DP World to move goods more reliably, sustainably and efficiently from ship to shop, continuing to raise the standard for end‑to‑end logistics.”

At Southampton, DP World is continuing to invest in infrastructure, with the first of several new quay cranes due to arrive later this year. The £60m project will create the tallest quay crane fleet in Europe, aimed at futureproofing operations at the Solent terminal.

DP World, headquartered in Dubai, operates in more than 75 countries and facilitates over 9% of global containerised trade.
