Port Newark Container Terminal orders 20 hybrid straddle carriers from Konecranes

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) in New Jersey has ordered 20 Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers equipped with eco-efficient hybrid drives, with delivery scheduled for Q4 2026. The order, booked in Q4 2025, marks PNCT’s second major investment in hybrid straddle carriers following the purchase of 15 units in Q4 2024.

PNCT, one of the largest container terminals on the US East Coast, relies entirely on Konecranes Noell straddle carriers, with over 200 units in its fleet. The new hybrid carriers combine a diesel genset with a rechargeable battery, reducing diesel consumption and emissions while maintaining the proven performance of Konecranes equipment. They will be used for ship-to-shore operations, container stacking, and loading and unloading trucks and rail wagons.

“PNCT has been operating Konecranes Noell straddle carriers for decades and we are convinced by their performance and reliability. We’ve already seen the benefits of the company’s hybrid drives, and this new investment is aimed at further reducing fuel consumption and operating with even higher efficiency overall,” says Charlie Ferlisi, Director of Engineering & Equipment Services at PNCT.

“This is a significant repeat order from a major US customer that knows our straddle carrier technology inside out. We very much value both PNCT’s trust in our hybrid-drive technology and our long partnership. This order shows how well this equipment performs in demanding terminal environments like here in New Jersey,” says Peter Kania, Sales Director, Port Solutions, Konecranes.

Konecranes supports PNCT with a major service location and a fully equipped spare parts warehouse near the terminal. The terminal also operates Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes and reach stackers. The contract forms part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, a roadmap toward zero tailpipe emissions that includes hybrid, fully electrified, renewable diesel, and emerging hydrogen solutions.

Konecranes said the investment reflects its commitment to supporting decarbonization in port operations, improving material handling efficiency, and advancing safety and circularity in the industry.
