The Netherlands Introduces Truck Kilometre Charge from July 2026 – Qargo Fully Prepared
The Dutch road transport sector will undergo a major change from 1 July 2026 with the launch of a kilometre-based truck charging scheme, replacing the Eurovignette system. Under the new rules, carriers will pay per kilometre driven, with costs determined by a vehicle’s weight and emissions class, aiming to create a fairer cost structure and promote cleaner transport.
The kilometre charge will apply to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on motorways, select N-roads, and certain municipal roads near major cities. Heavier and higher-emission vehicles will see higher charges. For example, based on 2025 rates, a Euro 6 truck over 32 tonnes would pay approximately €0.195 per kilometre, while a zero-emission truck of the same class would pay just €0.038 per kilometre. Tariffs will be indexed in 2026, but the principle of lower charges for cleaner vehicles remains.
Transport management platform Qargo is already fully prepared for the new legislation. Its system automatically incorporates the kilometre charge into cost calculations, planning, and quotes for trips scheduled after 1 July 2026. Using official tariffs and integrated PTV routing, Qargo provides precise visibility into costs per route, factoring in:
-
Which roads are subject to the charge
-
Vehicle weight and emissions class
-
Split between charged and non-charged kilometres
This ensures planners have immediate insight into the most cost-efficient routes without manual calculations. The system also allows transport companies to offer full transparency to customers, including tolls and kilometre charges, helping to justify pricing changes and maintain defensible quotes.
With the Qargo platform, transport operators can transition smoothly to the new kilometre charge system, ensuring accurate planning, cost calculations, and customer transparency from day one.
