Port of Klaipėda strengthens cooperation with Port of Valencia
The Port of Klaipėda is seeking to expand its international partnerships by strengthening cooperation with the Port of Valencia, one of the Mediterranean’s largest logistics hubs, during a visit by a Lithuanian delegation to Spain.
The discussions focus on closer collaboration in infrastructure development and joint efforts to attract additional cargo flows. The Port of Valencia operates an extensive shipping network and advanced infrastructure, handling around 80 million tonnes of cargo annually, including more than 5 million TEU. It is also recognised for its commitment to environmental initiatives.
The partnership comes as the Port of Klaipėda prepares for the largest expansion project in its history, with plans to develop a 100-hectare area in the southern part of the port. Valencia’s experience in delivering a similar large-scale development is seen as a valuable reference, particularly in implementing innovative solutions to reduce environmental impacts.
As the market leader among Baltic ports, Klaipėda continues to pursue opportunities to strengthen Lithuania’s maritime connections globally. Enhanced cooperation with Valencia could improve access to Mediterranean trade routes and established shipping corridors to more distant markets.
“The Port of Klaipėda is of strategic importance to Lithuania, so decisions relating to it are taken with close attention to global market developments, key industry stakeholders and their experience. This visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen our expertise in specific areas of the maritime sector”, said Lithuania’s Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Roderikas Žiobakas.
“In today’s market, success is determined not only by well-developed infrastructure, but also by ties with strong and reliable partners – and the Port of Valencia is one of them. This partnership gives us the opportunity to see first-hand the value-creating decisions being made at Europe’s leading ports. We also see the Port of Valencia, known for its high container volumes, as a partner in raising the Port of Klaipėda’s visibility in international freight markets”, remarked Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
Spain currently accounts for nearly 2% of Klaipėda’s total cargo volumes. In 2025, the port handled almost 723,000 tonnes of cargo linked to Spain, primarily grain and agricultural products, containerised goods and liquefied natural gas.
