Port of Gothenburg Acquires Land to Drive Westward Expansion

The Port of Gothenburg has acquired a substantial area in its outer port zones, securing land, office properties, and water areas to support its long-term expansion strategy. The agreement with seller Platzer, signed Tuesday, also includes the sale of a logistics property at the port entrance, bringing the net transaction value to SEK 684 million.

This aquisition is carried out to create conditions for the port’s continued long-term development. The Port of Gothenburg needs to keep growing in the future, and this is a natural step directly adjacent to existing port operations and surrounding logistics infrastructure, says Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg.

We are seeing steady volume growth over time, and to support the global competitiveness of Swedish industry, continuous development of the port is required, says Göran Eriksson.

The newly acquired land opens the door for up to 210,000 square meters of new terminal space, reinforcing the port’s position as the leading logistics hub in the Nordics. The expansion continues a westward development that began in the 1970s with the Älvsborg RoRo terminal and subsequent Arendal 2 project, which added 144,000 square meters of terminal space.

The area is adjacent to Stena Line’s new ferry terminal, currently under construction and scheduled for completion in 2031. Revenue from the existing office buildings will help finance ongoing development, with detailed expansion plans to be announced after the transaction is finalized. Both the acquisition and property divestment are subject to municipal council approval, with the transfer of ownership expected no earlier than Q4 2026.
