The former fishing village of Prerow on the German Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is known for its fine sandy beach and the unspoilt Darß forest. This season, the popular Baltic Sea resort offers a new destination and a new landmark: the longest pier in the entire Baltic Sea region, at 720 metres, connecting the beach with the new island port.

Construction of the horseshoe-shaped harbour, which replaces the former ‘Darßer Ort’ emergency harbour, took more than two years. The new port is located approximately 650 metres from the shore and offers optimal conditions for boats seeking shelter. Covering an area of 10,000 m², it can accommodate watercraft belonging to the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), the Prerow volunteer fire brigade, the sea rescue cruiser ‘Nis Randers’ and 8 small fishing boats. In addition, 33 berths for recreational boats have been created and a landing stage for passenger ships has been installed. The island harbour, which lies like a small atoll off the coast of Prerow, closes the large gap between the landing stages at Warnemünde and Barhöft. Visitors from the mainland also get their money’s worth: after a walk across the 4.20 m wide pier, which is built on 87 piles, the roof terrace of the new operations building offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Baltic Sea.

One highlight of the new Prerow island port is the boat crane supplied by VETTER. With a height of 8 m, a load capacity of 2.5 t and a reach of 5 m, the slewing crane is optimally tailored to the requirements of harbour operations. Specially designed for demanding maritime use in salty air, it reliably withstands the harsh weather conditions of the Baltic Sea. Harbour Master André Bartels and his team rely on this reliable technology every day: the crane can be controlled safely and conveniently by radio remote control and enables efficient handling of a wide variety of watercraft. Whether for water rescue operations, firefighting, fishing operations or the safe craning in and out of recreational boats, the VETTER boat crane is an indispensable part of the island harbour and stands for quality ‘Made in Germany’.
