CMA CGM Group, a global leader in integrated logistics, has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics, a major player in the United Kingdom’s rail freight sector. This move marks a significant expansion of CMA CGM’s intermodal services in Europe, enhancing the company’s position in rail logistics and underscoring its commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
Freightliner, which operates rail and road services, inland terminals, and other logistics functions, will continue to function as a multi-user, multi-customer operator. While retaining its independence, Freightliner will benefit from the global reach and resources of CMA CGM in shipping and logistics. This acquisition is expected to accelerate the modal shift from road to rail, a key strategy for reducing CO₂ emissions and supporting CMA CGM’s decarbonization initiatives.
The acquisition is part of CMA CGM’s broader effort to create a sustainable and competitive transport offering across Europe. By bringing Freightliner under its umbrella, CMA CGM strengthens its intermodal capabilities, combining rail, maritime, and road transport to deliver more efficient and eco-friendly logistics solutions for customers.
CMA CGM is also emphasizing the complementary nature of its maritime and rail expertise. By enhancing connectivity between key European ports and the UK hinterland through strategically located inland terminals, the company aims to offer seamless, integrated services that benefit from both modes of transport.
The integration of Freightliner supports CMA CGM’s long-term decarbonization goals. Rail freight is a critical part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions in supply chains, and with Freightliner’s extensive expertise, CMA CGM is well-positioned to provide low-carbon, cost-efficient transportation options.
The company is also committed to driving innovation in logistics, particularly in the development of decarbonized solutions. By leveraging its expanded rail network, CMA CGM plans to offer enhanced-value services that combine sea, land, and rail transportation, further reducing the environmental footprint of its logistics operations.
CMA CGM has had a strong presence in the UK for many years, with nearly 7,200 employees working across maritime, logistics, and inland services. The acquisition of Freightliner UK further solidifies the company’s footprint, complementing its existing maritime and logistics operations. In 2024, CMA CGM transported 802,000 TEUs to and from the UK, while its intermodal subsidiary CCIS moved 200,000 TEUs by rail and road in the first half of 2025.
Furthermore, CEVA Logistics, a CMA CGM subsidiary, employs thousands across the UK, providing integrated end-to-end solutions, from air freight to ocean freight, and reinforcing the Group’s position as a major logistics player in Europe.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, said: “The acquisition of Freightliner, a leading rail freight operator, strengthens our intermodal presence in the United Kingdom, a strategic market for CMA CGM. It enables us to connect sea, rail and road more efficiently, delivering better solutions for our customers. It is also a concrete step in expanding lower-carbon transport options, supporting both their needs and the decarbonization of global trade.”
Commenting on the divestment, Tim Shoveller, Chief Executive Officer of Freightliner Group, said: “This transaction marks an exciting new chapter for Intermodal and Heavy Haul, allowing each to focus on their distinct markets under separate ownership. The Intermodal business will become a stand-alone business within CMA CGM’s portfolio, with opportunities to collaborate with other arm’s length CMA CGM companies. Heavy Haul will continue its growth journey in the bulk materials sector under a new brand with a clear focus on strengthening its position as a key freight operator. Our customers will continue to receive the same high-quality leadership and operational teams, and we have robust plans in place to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.”
The acquisition is expected to close in early 2026, pending regulatory approval. Notably, other Freightliner businesses, including Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding, and Freightliner’s operations in Poland and Germany, will remain under their current ownership.
By expanding its rail logistics capabilities through this acquisition, CMA CGM is poised to play an even larger role in the future of sustainable and decarbonized global supply chains. With a strengthened network and a renewed commitment to innovation, CMA CGM is set to offer customers more efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective logistics solutions across Europe and beyond.
