Foodora Tests Food Delivery with Autonomous Robots in Fornebu
Residents of Fornebu may now encounter something unusual on their streets – a robot! The area has become the first place in Norway to test self-driving robots for food deliveries via Foodora, marking a milestone in sustainable and innovative technology. The project aims to position Fornebu as a forward-thinking district, where technology is used to simplify daily life for its residents.
Safe and Smart Technology
This groundbreaking project is a collaboration between Holo, Smart City Bærum, Norconsult, Foodora, Telia, OBOS, and Storebrand. Together, they seek to explore how autonomous robots can improve city logistics and delivery solutions.
The delivery robots, which operate at walking and cycling speeds, are equipped with advanced sensors, allowing them to navigate safely in urban environments. They are continuously monitored by operators, ensuring that they do not operate unsupervised but are tested under careful oversight.
It is important to note that these robots are not replacing the human couriers who currently handle food deliveries. Rather, they are intended to complement the existing service, blending flexibility and technology to create innovative delivery solutions for the future.
Research and Education Component
The pilot project also serves a research and educational purpose, partnering with OsloMet through Norconsult. As part of the Urban Mobility course, students will closely follow the robots during the pilot phase, documenting their experiences and contributing valuable insights.
“We understand that new technology often raises curiosity, questions, and perhaps even some skepticism. That’s why we want to be transparent throughout the process and give you the opportunity to follow the project closely,” said the team behind the initiative.
