Kombiverkehr Group to Take Over Operations at Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen Terminal from 2026
The Kombiverkehr Group will assume operations of the PKV intermodal terminal in Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen beginning 1 January 2026, marking a significant operational shift after more than two decades.
The terminal, owned by Planungsgesellschaft Kombinierter Verkehr mbH (PKV) since 1991, has been managed by Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße mbH (DUSS) since 2003. DUSS currently operates the site in which Kombiverkehr KG holds a 12.5% stake. From 2026, operations will transfer to Kombiverkehr Intermodal Services GmbH Duisburg, a fully owned subsidiary of Kombiverkehr KG.
With the transition, the terminal will also be rebranded as “Rail Hub Duisburg.”
“More than 20 countries can be reached by rail from Duisburg. This makes the continental terminal in the port of Ruhrort an important gateway hub in our European network. We currently account for around 95 per cent of traffic. In future, we will be able to contribute our expertise in operations much more directly than was previously the case, and of course non-discriminatory access to the terminal infrastructure will continue to be guaranteed for third parties,” says Heiko Krebs, Managing Director of Kombiverkehr KG, explaining the new commitment. ‘We want to respond quickly to the needs of customers and users and thus provide even better support in shifting their transport to environmentally friendly rail. In addition, technical developments are already being planned in cooperation with the owner to ensure the future viability of this important terminal.’
Built in the early 1990s and in operation since 1992, the terminal spans 85,000 square metres and features three gantry cranes operating across eight tracks, as well as one track equipped for reach stacker handling. It supports the efficient transfer of intermodal units between rail and road transport.
To further enhance capacity, a newly acquired heavy-duty crane equipped with a special spreader will be introduced by late autumn 2025, capable of moving tank containers weighing up to 75 tonnes.
The facility also includes designated hazardous goods storage and is designed for an annual throughput of approximately 200,000 intermodal units, making it a key logistics hub within the Port of Duisburg.
