Next-Gen Hybrid Tankers from Terntank to Feature Auramarine Methanol Technology
Auramarine, a leading provider of fuel supply and auxiliary systems, has signed a new agreement to deliver methanol fuel supply systems for two of Terntank’s next-generation hybrid tankers. The deal builds on the successful collaboration between the two companies, following the delivery of similar systems for three of Terntank’s 15,000 DWT hybrid tankers over the past year.
The new vessels, which are designed for enhanced sustainability, will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on marine gas oil (MGO), biofuels, and methanol. In addition, the tankers will feature wind-assisted propulsion to further reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
Auramarine’s methanol fuel supply systems are scheduled for delivery in April and September 2026. The vessels themselves will be delivered by China Merchant’s Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou in January and June 2027, respectively.
Commenting on the agreement, John Bergman, CEO, Auramarine, said: “We are delighted to announce that Terntank has once again selected Auramarine as their preferred methanol fuel supply system provider for the second time.
“As well as price and availability, a key element driving the widespread uptake of future fuels is having the right bunkering and onboard operational infrastructure in place. Today’s agreement confirms that we are on the right path. At Auramarine, we are committed to supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonization and will continue to innovate to bring new solutions to market which will effectively support the green energy transition.”
Claes Möller, CEO, Tärntank Ship Management, added: “The new vessels demonstrate Terntank’s commitment to delivering sustainable shipping practices and supporting the industry as it looks to meet its decarbonisation targets. The hybrid tankers project, which is among the first of its kind, has required close collaboration with a number of partners. Given our recent positive experience with Auramarine, they were the natural choice to provide the methanol supply system for these new vessels.”
This agreement marks another step forward in the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner fuels, with methanol emerging as a promising alternative to conventional marine fuels.
Auramarine will be showcasing its methanol fuel supply system at the upcoming Donsö Shipping Meet in Sweden, taking place from September 2–3, 2025. Visitors can meet the Auramarine team at Booth E-49 and tour the TERN VIK, a vessel already operating with Auramarine’s methanol technology.
