Just Eat Expands Autonomous Delivery Robot Trial to Cambourne with Morrisons
Just Eat is expanding its autonomous delivery partnership with Starship Technologies to Cambourne, Cambridgeshire, bringing robot-powered grocery deliveries to more than 12,000 residents and opening the service to customers in a new market.
The expansion marks the first trial location where Just Eat does not already offer grocery delivery, creating an opportunity to reach new customers in areas where traditional delivery services may be more limited.
The initiative builds on demand in Sunderland and Milton Keynes, where Starship’s autonomous robots use artificial intelligence (AI) to navigate independently, avoid obstacles and make real-time delivery decisions. Starship has held an agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council to operate in Cambourne since 2022.
Morrisons is among the first grocery retailers to adopt the technology, with its Cambourne supermarket becoming the fourth Morrisons store to offer autonomous robot deliveries. Three Morrisons Daily stores are already participating across Sunderland and Milton Keynes.
Customers can order thousands of products, ranging from everyday essentials and fresh produce to ready-to-eat meals and snacks, for delivery directly to their chosen address. The robots are designed to accommodate a typical midweek shop of around 12 items, offering additional delivery capacity during busy periods, including the run-up to Christmas.
Promotions are also helping drive demand. Just Eat’s regular Half Price Wednesdays offer 50% off selected essentials, with cucumbers, chicken, milk and eggs currently among the most popular Morrisons products ordered through the service.
To encourage adoption in Cambourne, Just Eat announced an introductory offer of £5 off orders of £25 or more, with free delivery through 21 October. The company has also integrated the Morrisons More Card into its app, allowing customers to access loyalty benefits when shopping through the platform.
Charlotte Exell, Group Online Director at Morrisons said: “We are pleased to be working with Just Eat and Starship Technologies to trial autonomous robot deliveries from our Cambourne supermarket as we continue exploring innovative ways to serve our local community. Marking our first time offering Just Eat delivery in the area, shoppers ordering from our Cambourne store via the app will have their orders delivered exclusively by robot. In addition to Cambourne, the trial is also underway across three of our Morrisons Daily stores.”
Caroline Bates, Grocery & Retail Director for Just Eat said: “Our autonomous delivery trials are all about innovating to improve the customer experience – whether that’s enabling us to offer delivery in new areas like Cambourne or increase delivery capacity and speeds in the run up to Christmas. We’ll be listening closely to customer feedback on this new and exciting service.”
David Ringer, Director of Corporate Accounts in Europe at Starship Technologies: “We’re delighted to be serving households across the UK alongside partners as strong as Just Eat and Morrisons. Our smart robots bring advanced autonomous technology to something very ordinary, and they’re built for reliability, because their first job is to serve the community and make the grocery shop convenient and fast.”
Just Eat said the expansion forms part of its wider investment in AI-driven logistics and customer experience. The company is exploring how technology can extend delivery access and improve service while complementing its existing courier network rather than replacing it. The initiative follows other technology developments, including the introduction of Voice AI earlier in 2026.
