Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) Gdynia has expanded its container handling capabilities with the delivery of two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes, supporting the terminal’s ongoing capacity expansion and infrastructure modernisation.

The cranes, supplied following an EU-funded tender, were delivered on schedule in June 2026 and are configured specifically for container handling. They join two existing Liebherr LHM 400 cranes already in operation at the terminal, providing operational continuity and maintenance efficiencies.

Each LHM 550 crane offers an outreach of up to 54 metres and is equipped with Liebherr’s Pactronic hybrid energy storage system, designed to improve energy efficiency during intensive cargo handling operations. The cranes are also prepared for future electric-drive retrofits, enabling the terminal to support longer-term decarbonisation objectives.

The machines have been engineered to suit the berth’s structural requirements, including specially designed supporting pads, and successfully completed eight-hour endurance testing before entering service.

BCT Gdynia, part of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), is one of Poland’s leading container terminals, with an annual handling capacity of around one million TEU. The facility serves as a key logistics hub for the Baltic region, offering direct road and rail connections, including the ability to accommodate full-length container trains serving southern Poland and Central Europe.

The crane investment forms part of a wider expansion programme at the Port of Gdynia, which includes upgraded quay infrastructure, new ship-to-shore cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes, terminal tractors and digital technologies. The improvements are designed to accommodate larger vessels, increase operational efficiency and support future growth in container volumes.

Recent quay upgrades have enabled the terminal to handle ships up to 400 metres in length, while planned developments are expected to increase berth handling capacity to between 1.2 million and 1.6 million TEU, depending on the final crane configuration.

Liebherr said the project also includes extended warranty coverage for key structural components, supporting long-term asset reliability and lifecycle performance in demanding port operations.
